The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), launched in February 1909, was founded by four white men and one white woman and a mixed race man—a strange creation story for an organization meant to champion black Americans. This is a unique quirk of the black experience in America: others often deciding what is best for us. Online, you might see Ida B. Wells listed as a founder, but that is not accurate—she was a key figure, but not at the founding. In fact, there are some records that suggest DuBois attempted to limit her leadership in the early days of the organization. If you ask Google Generative AI who were the founders it offers the most progressive and incorrect answer. It removes the four white men from the founders list and adds Ms. Wells.
